How to Organize Services into Categories

Organize your services into categories like Facials, Waxing, and Body Treatments to keep your menu structured.

7 min read

Categories help you organize your services into logical groups so clients can browse your menu easily. Whether you offer facials, body treatments, waxing, or injectables, categories keep everything structured on your booking page and within the admin dashboard. Every service in SpaSphere must be assigned to a category.

Why This Matters for Your Spa

A well-organized service menu directly impacts how many visitors convert into booked appointments. When clients land on a cluttered or unstructured booking page, they spend more time searching and less time booking -- and many leave without scheduling at all. Research on service-based businesses shows that clear menu categorization can reduce booking abandonment by 15-20%. For a spa that sees 200 booking page visitors per month, that improvement translates to 30-40 additional bookings per month. Categories also help your team internally: when your front desk can quickly find services during phone bookings, call handling time drops and client satisfaction improves.

Key Capabilities

  • Edit or delete existing categories at any time
  • Search and filter categories in the categories table
  • Assign a category to each service during creation or editing
  • Categories are displayed on your public booking page to help clients find services

Creating a Category

1

Navigate to the Categories page

Click Categories in the sidebar. You will see a table of all your existing categories with their names and descriptions.

2

Click Add Category

Click the Add Category button in the top-right corner. A modal form appears.

3

Enter the category details

Type a clear, descriptive name for the category (e.g., "Facials", "Body Treatments", "Injectables", "Waxing"). Add an optional description to provide more context about what types of services belong in this group.

4

Save the category

Click the save button to create the category. It immediately becomes available in the category dropdown on the service creation and editing forms.

Plan your categories before building your menu

Before creating services, set up your categories. This saves time because you can assign a category immediately when adding each service. Common categories for spas include Facials, Massage, Body Treatments, Waxing, Nails, Injectables, and Consultations. Keeping your category count between 5 and 10 strikes the right balance -- enough to organize clearly, but not so many that clients feel overwhelmed browsing your booking page.

Editing a Category

To update a category, click on its row in the categories table. The edit modal opens with the name and description pre-filled. Make your changes and save. All services assigned to this category will reflect the updated name automatically.

Deleting a Category

To delete a category, open it for editing and click the Delete button. A confirmation dialog asks you to verify the deletion before proceeding.

Reassign services first to avoid booking page issues

Before deleting a category, make sure no active services are assigned to it. Services without a valid category may not display correctly on your booking page, which can confuse clients and lead to lost bookings. Navigate to Services, filter by the category you plan to delete, and reassign each service to another category before removing the old one.

Assigning Categories to Services

Every service in SpaSphere requires a category. You set the category during service creation and can change it at any time by editing the service.

1

Open the service form

When creating or editing a service, find the Category dropdown in the settings sidebar (or in the Settings panel on mobile).

2

Select a category

Choose from the alphabetically sorted list of categories. The selected category determines where the service appears on your public booking page.

3

Save the service

Click Save Service to confirm the category assignment. The service now appears under the selected category on your booking page and in the services table.

Category is required to keep your menu structured

When creating a new service, the category field is required. You must select a category before saving. When editing an existing service, the category can be changed but not removed. This requirement ensures every service is properly organized on your booking page, which improves the client browsing experience and keeps your internal service table easy to manage.

Searching Categories

Use the search bar at the top of the Categories page to filter categories by name or description. This is especially helpful when you have a large number of categories and need to find a specific one quickly.

How Categories Appear to Clients

On your public booking page, services are grouped by their assigned category. Clients see category headings with the services listed underneath. This makes it easy for them to browse your full menu and find the treatment they want.

Well-named categories improve the client booking experience by providing clear structure. Use concise, industry-standard names that your clients will immediately recognize.
